This monument was erected to honor George Washington in the Mount Vernon section of Baltimore. The strings of lights were installed and lit on December 1st to "celebrate the holiday season".
In this season of Christmas celebrations, there is a pertinent quotation from George Washington touching upon both religion and the building of his home in Mount Vernon, Virginia.
"Washington was an early supporter of religious toleration and freedom of religion...When hiring workmen for [his residence in] Mount Vernon [Virginia], he wrote to his agent, 'If they be good workmen, they may be from Asia, Africa, or Europe; they may be Mohammedans [Muslims], Jews, or Christians of any sect, or they may be Atheists.'"
